Why
Chess.com Game Review and lichess analysis tell you what went wrong in one game. chess-retro downloads your games, analyses every one with Stockfish, and aggregates across your whole history to rank your recurring weaknesses. Then it prescribes puzzles aimed at exactly those gaps.
It opens on "your top 3 weaknesses in blitz", not on a list of games.
What it does
Ranks recurring weaknesses
Missed tactics, game phase, time pressure, costly openings, and your worst piece, all competing in one ranking per time control.
Explains in plain English
Each weakness comes with the statistic behind it and links to the positions in your own games.
Prescribes puzzles
Targeted practice for the tactics you actually miss, from the Lichess puzzle database.
Analyses your full history
Stockfish on every game, resumable. Pause, close the laptop, pick it up later.
Interactive game review
Explore variations on a board with live engine analysis.
Cheap to keep current
Re-sync fetches and analyses only your new games.
Private by design
Everything runs on your machine: your games, your database. Only your public chess.com username is needed, with no password and no account. An Anthropic API key is optional and adds written coaching.
Quick start
brew install stockfish # Node.js 22+ also required
git clone https://github.com/wesnam/chess-retro
cd chess-retro
npm install
npm run dev
Budget about an hour to your first dashboard, mostly unattended analysis. Full steps are in the README.
Early development. The bundled peer cohort is rated about 600 to 680 (rapid), so rankings are most accurate for players in that range.
